WIRELESS data transmission……in the LAN….is about to get a big boost….. How about three times current transmission speeds. Qualcomm’s recent announcement of their MU-MIMO (multi-user, multiple input, multiple output) is the next evolution in wireless standards.
The phenomenal explosive growth in the number of wireless devices…for the home, for travel, for the office has wireless looking somewhat slow……only one device is sending and receiving information at a time…. So, this accumulation of sequential events creates a backlog, and a recognizable drop in throughput. The new goal has been how to make more efficient use of available WIFI network capacity and speeding up transmissions.
This MU-MIMO does just that…it is breakthrough technology. Just to review, current standards allow “one lane” of multiple input, multiple output data transmission. This is similar to….having one lane of traffic at the entrance to your favorite theme park. But, after seven years of development and research, the new algorithms allow multiple users to be served together…..akin to having multiple lanes at your theme park entrance.
“Great connectivity is not just about increasing the absolute speed. It’s about making better use of network and airtime efficiency to support the growing number of connected devices, services and applications,” said Dan Rabinovitsj, senior vice president, Qualcomm Atheros, Inc.
Qualcomm chips will be used in wireless routers, access points, smartphones, tablets, and other WIFI devices…..however, we have to wait until early 2015 to get this new technology. But look for this technology to be demonstrated at technology conferences, etc. in the coming months.
